Adam Grant recently posted about (see it here) the 8th Habit of Highly Effective People (extending Steven Covey’s original 7 Habits) with the following observations (and an excellent graphic from Janis Ozolins):
– Extended reflection without action is a form of procrastination.
– Doing is a catalyst for thinking and learning.
These together made me think about how I, as an executive/leadership coach, can help a client with this 8th habit in an actionable way. Here is where I landed.
You see, as a coach, I believe I have two key roles:
1) to be a thought partner to help a client unlock the process of Learning & Thinking, 𝐀𝐍𝐃;
2) to be an accountability partner to help a client build the systems and structures needed to ensure the Doing happens.
So, it’s by serving in both roles in the right amounts with the right tools that I can best help a client develop their version of the 8th Habit. With that in mind, I added to Janis’ graphic an overlay of these coaching partnerships.
Have you worked with a coach (or, done so on your own) to move beyond a Feel-good Procrastinator to become Someone Moving Forward? Please drop some of your wisdom in the comments.
And, if you think you might need some thought & accountability partnership to become Someone Moving Forward, well, I’d love to hear from you, too — comment or HMU at robert.teed@integrigroup.com.
